Using cow hide rugs

It took me a long time to decide whether or not I liked cow hides for rugs. Initially they conjured up images of country ranches, rather than anything sophisticated or modern. The more I've seen them though, the more they've grown on me.

It still surprises me how versatile the piece can be and I've seen them work in everything from industrial lofts to classic living rooms. These are some spaces where I think the cow hide really works...

What do you think of these? And, how do you feel about using animal products like hides and leather in interiors?

  1. I don't like them, never will.... I would never have one in the house, having said that they don't look to bad in the above pics...

  2. I still find them strange and a bit out of place in interiors. We had one as a floor rug growing up. It was light brown and white, quite beautiful but to have it as a rug was strange. No idea where my parents got it. We're they popular floor coverings in the 60s/70s?

  4. i think they look cool, but i can't bring myself to do it. i don't eat beef so it would be sorta weird to lay it on my floor!

  6. I love them Anna, and the first two images are superb! I have a black and white one in my entry and they are sturdy as well as looking good. I think I like the random shape the most. I have a vegetarian friend who was horrified but she wears leather shoes and uses a leather handbag. ? I like that I'm using the 'waste' product of another industry...in my case a dairy cow. As with everything animal related, there are always ethical debates but from a purely aesthetic viewpoint they tick all my boxes.

  7. I love them. It took me ages (maybe a year in real time) to convince my husband to get one for his office, and it's the perfect masculine/design/organic thing for it:)

  9. I really like them, have had my eye on them for a while and bought one over the weekend for the lounge room. But now I'm questioning whether you would or wouldn't you put furniture on it? I'm leaning towards not so will most likely take it upstairs into the the bedroom or put it in the chill out room.

  10. I love my cowhide carpets! I have two patchwork versions and made one into a headboard. Looks amazing but totally grosses out my vegetarian friends. I love it.

  11. Did you design all of the rooms? If so you have stunning tastes. The cowhide rugs are great and sure do finish the rooms perfectly
